Hey everyone,
I wanted to share something important that happened to me recently, which was pretty eye-opening. I got this call from someone saying they were from FedEx. They had this story about a package sent to Taiwan from Mumbai with my name on it, and it was supposedly filled with all sorts of illegal stuff like passports, credit cards, and drugs. The scariest part? They said my Aadhar Card, which is a big deal here in India as an identity proof, was used to send it.
Then things got even weirder. They transferred my call to someone claiming to be from the Mumbai Cyber Crime Department. This person, pretending to be a police officer, told me I needed to file a complaint through Skype. When we got on Skype, this fake officer was there in a police uniform, trying to look all official, asking me to give personal info which could be used for all sorts of bad stuff like bank fraud.
I ended the call when it was the time he asked me about authenticating things and told him I knew it was a fraud and he just disconnected.
See It for Yourself
I managed to record the whole thing, including the Skype call with the scammer pretending to be a cop. I've put it up on YouTube so you can see exactly how these scams work:
Over the years I learned a lot from such experiences where we panic and end up being cheated.
How to Stay Safe?
1. Don't just believe it if someone says they're from an organization/ police/ banks etc. If you're unsure, hang up and call the official number yourself.
2. Never give out personal details like your bank info over the phone, especially if the call seems out of the blue.
3. If you really have to deal with such calls, use their official contact details, not some number or link a random caller gives you. Once I got call from these guys I made a contact to FedEx representative through their official website to confirm the same and he informed no such sort of shipment exists! That made me realize these callers were scammers.
4. If something feels off about a call, it probably is. It's better to be cautious. Trust your instincts.
5. Talk about these scams with your friends and family. The more people know, the less likely they are to fall for them.
Much more to discuss. I guess in this era of digitalization staying informed, updated about such malpractices is now mandatory no matter what age group you or friends and family are.
Just So You Know: This video and my story are all about raising awareness. There's no real FedEx or police involved in the scam I fell into. I just want to make sure others can spot these tricks and stay safe. It's all about looking out for each other and staying one step ahead of the scammers.
Stay safe and take care of each other.
